Isolation
This photograph is one of a series on windows/isolation/spaces between people/ etc. This one depicts my daughter Lauren who was disabled in a car accident when she was four. Despite this tragedy, she has achieved a lot. Representing Australia in the US in wheelchair sports, becoming a fashion model in the 90s which culminated in a lot of media coverage and led to her being chosen as the face of the year for the Australian Couture collection in Sydney. ‘Too much Too Young’ could be her theme song as sadly soon after her life spiralled out of control and culminated in an overdose in 2000. She was on life support for a week and was not expected to survive, but I just knew she would… It has been a slow road back but with lots of support and encouragement Lauren is finding her way again this time through writing and art. She hopes to have her writing printed one day and is considering doing a fine art degree next year. Lauren has a classic beauty and since I took up photography about 3 years ago has been ‘my muse’ on many occasions. I particularly like this photo of her as it shows her classic looks off in a setting reminiscent of the 20-30s. The window serves not only as a protection from the outside world but can also be seen as a form of imprisionment and isolation. The window frame acts as a support, but also could be conceived as a burden.

nice portrait good b&w
Gerijuliaj
Thanks Paul – Lauren has a very expressive face which shows some of the trials and tribulations she has had to deal with in life – I also think a bond between photographer and subject can help in disolving any pretence and show part of their true character and emotion.
Gerijuliaj
Thank you migkats. Very appreciative of your comment

Jennifer Vickers
She is gorgeous. a very 1920-30s feel to it.
Gerijuliaj
Thanks jeromelorieau for your comment and also would like to thank Jennifer. You are right about the 1920-30s feel. I think I unconsciously tried to create that mood.

It’s a beautiful shot, of a beautiful girl.
What a proud mum you must be, for so many reasons.

One thing I neglected to mention in correspondence is that your presentation – image and text together – speaks volumes about a mother’s love. My wife, Diana, brought that up. I, of course, was going to say the same thing in my email, but… I got a cramp in my finger, or something… Has nothing to do with the fact that she may be a hell of a lot brighter than
meI…her husband. Cramps are nothing to sneeze at…can be very painful sometimes… make you cranky, the whole deal…Shree
aah what a moment captured by your amazing photogenic skills…
Simon Mears
the portrait alone is outstanding, put together with your words, the background, it all becomes very much more a personal testament to your love and your daughter’s bravery and ability to cope with what confronts her.. a testimony to the human spirit no less, a beautiful thing. Thank you for sharing this.
Gerijuliaj
Thank you to Shawhouse, Shree and Simon. Your comments mean a lot to me.

When I first saw this photo my first impression was also that she appeared to be a classic beauty from the 30’s.
This photo evokes so much emotion on it’s own. I thank you for sharing the narrative also. She has been on quite a journey.
Gerijuliaj
Thank you Moshe for your comments – they are very appreciated.
Gerijuliaj
Thank you Belinda – I appreciate your comments very much The photo can stand on its own without the narrative, but I thought the narrative put it in perspective.

Evocative definitely to the 20-40’s. Such a face!!! Her expression, and the framing complete this image. Really wonderful work, and I wish the best to your daughter, and peace.

Martie Venter
She does make a wonderful model, such exquisite classical beauty! A very powerful portrait imbued with additional poignance and significance once you read Lauren’s story. I keep seeing more emotions and expressions in her beautiful face every time I look at the image again. Superb and very inspiring work!
sharra
your daughter is a very beautiful woman. She is amazing, a classic beauty and exceptionally motivated. Do not see anything in a negative light. she is an inspiration to everyone in the universe….
i love your work ..im so glad you have taken up photography…..please allow me to favour this photo. I do not see this as a prison. I see it as a woman who is exceptionally in demand due to her beauty and motivations, hence she needs to be guarded from fame.
