Wooden Chair

Some windows blinked back with panels thrown open, others drowsed with blinds pulled down. Occasionally an inhabitant flashed past a square portal, but despite the mutterings of the griping wind little else moved.

Small balconies housed too many chairs, competing with each other for a place to rest. Yet, in the midst of this, a sole wooden seat faced out boldly, looking much more secure on its uncluttered balcony than its crowded neighbours.

Perhaps its owners were in an office in the city, toiling to keep a roof over its frame. Did they like what they did, or endure the monotonous indignities of a meaningless job with insulting demands assaulting them on a daily basis?

Beneath the chair a pigeon plumped and strutted, bumbling along the old prison wall. The object of its affections stood unimpressed.
