Tawny Frogmouth Sketch - Sketchbook Project pic 1 by georgiegirl

Posted on January 16, 2012

I joined the Arthouse Sketchbook Project late last year – all of a few weeks ago (saying “last year” makes it sound so long ago!). We have various themes to choose from and I’ve chosen Why did the owl make everyone laugh?. Well, why not, I thought, everyone needs a good laugh now and then… thinking that it would just be awesome to draw heaps of owls and things that made others laugh. Note I said ‘others’ and not ‘people’. You know I can’t draw humans very well… and if you didn’t, you do now!!

I’ve been drawing quite a few sketches over the past couple of weeks, and have finally drawn one I’m happy to share. Its still in pencil form and so scanned pretty rough but I think its pretty cool. Its not exactly an owl, but these birds behave like owls, so I’m including them in my project.

This first owl is a Tawny Frogmouth, an Australasian ‘owl’, famous for pretending to be tree branches or squawking with their big yellow mouths open to scare intruders away. I love them. They have so much character and attitude! Their chicks are totally adorable too, all you can see are fluffy feathers, big black eyes and huge sharp beaks!

If you need a quick art fix or want to learn more about this project, check out Arthouse Sketchbook Project or the Sketchbook Project group at RB.

You can never have too much art or creativity in your life!

    Excellent. :) I’m still stumped about my theme. I got my book direct from the library so I don’t know if I can join the RB one. I’m thinking “Sunday mornings in the Avenue” scribble sketches of what I see. Not sure though. Wish I could decide. Starting to feel a bit panicked.

    {{waves!! a tad late to respond but they say better late than never!!}}

    I got my book through the Arthouse website and have joined the group. They’ve accepted bits and pieces of mine too, so you should be fine!!! Can’t wait to see what theme you choose and to see your art :D You know, being a bit hooked on the ukulele these days, you could always choose a theme that incorporates that!!!

    I scanned mine and sent the book back awhile ago (2012 project) and have it HERE They also scanned it but they got some of the pages out of order so I hope my email to them results in it being put right. Until then, I have my scans up so you can see the full pg spread drawings in correct order. I haven’t sent for the next one, might do it again for 2013 but haven’t decided. It was a lot of fun and got me back into daily drawing again which was good.

    Your sketchbook looks great!!! Looks like you had fun for sure… but I could only view the odd numbered pages, the poor ol’ unicorn only has half a head. Maybe Arthouse have done it that way cos they want everyone to go to the exhibitions? My fave was the Magic Pot :D He’s so cute!!! Anne and I have till April to finish ours, so don’t need to panic that I’ve run out of time just yet!!!
