Mother Nature at her best

How does such an ugly, prickly, unfriendly plant produce the most beautiful flowers? Obviously Mother Nature playing games after creating roses and daisies and other beautiful flowers with attractive foliage.
The flowers the above cactus produces are shown by Danni as well as below.
There was or is a house somewhere between Adelaide and Dublin that is surrounded by so many species of cactus. I always thought it an ugly garden until I moved to Laura where Mum and Dad had a couple of cactus plants. They were destined to be dug out (such is the sad fate of ugly, prickly plants) but one day they all showed their inner beauty of reds and pinks. Of course, after that day, they were cherished plants of the garden along with all the others.
Just an example of why not to judge books by their covers.

Awwwww :) WHat a gorgeous story and so true :) :) We have huge ones along the roads here in places and boy do they look gorgeous when they are in flower :) :)

Hello you!! Bet you didn’t like them either until you saw them flower! Mind you, some of those cute fluffly things they sell in garden shops look pretty cool… they’re in every colour of the rainbow! You just have to pat them the right way ;D

They are indeed beautiful GG. And I hear Prickly Pears are very tasty too, although I’ve never been quite game to put this to the test. Evidently if you put the fruit in your fridge, the prickly skin peals away quite easily. Perhaps we should give it a go, hey. Millions of Italians can’t be wrong – after all, pizza, pasta, gelato!!!!

What about you, the reporter, give it a go and write a review!! From the picking the fruit from the grocer to biting into it!!! Then I’ll think about it… they’re not very cheap over here ;D

Giggle Pat them the right way. LOL Yeah right, that’s like me picking up a huntsman for a nice Macro shot ;)

ah, a challenge. Might have to engage the expert advice of my friends at the local winery. I’m sure they could help!!!

dad has an amazing cactus garden, well everything in his garden is amazing…the cacti read as high as the second story of the house and it’s fascinating when they come into flower or fruit…they are an amazing plant, i used to dislike them too, but now i only have respect…..they are the hardiest plants, so resilient and ugly and beautiful, all at the same time, a paradox plant, the best kind!! love your pics and what you wrote georgiegirl, great insights!
