Speeding along on the Ord River by

This was a wonderful experience, quite breathtaking at times. The cruise is from Kuninurra to the Argyle Dam – a distance of some 60 kms. It takes exactly 3 hours and this includes time out of about 40 minutes for morning tea. Furthermore we are not doing this speed all the time – many’s the time he would shut down altogether and just drift along whilst he explained various aspects of the river, the dam project and the surrounding gorge.
This is situated in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and very close to the border with the Northern Territory. We would be some 3000 kms north east of Perth.
Photo was taken with my Sony DSC R1 in shutter priority (what else?) at 1/200th second and ISO at 400. hand held, of course, and an nd4 filter attached.

  • Thanks Evita. I’ve said it before, but the scenery up here is just stunning and should be on the list of every Aussie to try and visit at some time in their lives.

  • Hi Julie and very many thanks. As I just said to Evita, the scenery in our Kimberley region is stunning and these river gorges defy description!

this is wonderful Peter, it must have been quite exhilarating.hugs.x

  • It was exhilarating, for sure with the closeness of the river banks making it seem that we were going at lot faster than we really were. Somebody said the speedometer was reading 60 kmh a lot of the time. I’m delighted that you like this – thank you so very much.
    Hugs
    Peter

No concern for bank conservation there Peter, but I suppose there is not that much traffic, wonderful shot, it shows the speed you were travelling, no wonder you had to use shutter setting.

  • Thanks Ken. Apart from a few fishermen in their little outboard dinghies I doubt whether there is much other traffic. The owner of this business has two similar boats and certainly there was no obvious sign of anyone else competing with him.
    Cheers

    Marvellous!

  • Thanks very much Don. He had these two very large outboards and they generated a LOT of power!

I’m surprised you didn’t get the skis on. Good shot Mate.

  • Thanks Al – and I wonder why I didn’t think of that?

Just now and then, it can be wonderful to look back rather than forwards, surely this has to be one of those times Peter, so refreshing looking,
    Regards, Rod.

  • There weren’t too many occasions on this trip when I COULD look back because of the early morning sun shining straight on us. But for once we had come round a fairly sharp bend in the river and for a few brief seconds the sun ceased to be a problem!
    Cheers

Hi Peter, Fantastic picture I love the colour white on blue a site to behold for sure, and I bet a lot less bumpy than the ride I had a few weeks ago in the Ariel Atom, love your work keep them coming mate!!!

  • Hi Mike and many thanks for looking in and leaving your usual kind comment. A bit different from flying but I was far from certain that we were not going to take off every now and then!
    Cheers

Fabulous shot, we went on a speed boat down the Waikato river in New Zealand, it was great fun but usually I am not good on water,

  • Always good to see you Ann and thanks very much for the kind words. This was a fairly good size boat but towards the end of my holiday I went on a jet boat through the horizontal falls and that was the thrill of a lifetime!
    Take care

Awesome, Peter. Looks like such fun. I can’t wait to be able to explore that area.
I just did a Ord River Cruise search…magic! Ta for the accompanying information too.

  • Great to see you again Sonia and very many thanks. The previous 3 or 4 photos were also the Ord River and earlier on I uploaded one of Lake Argyle taken from the dam. If you’re planning a trip up that way let me know and I might be able to give you a few useful tips – for example the scenic flights are wonderful and well worth the cost.
    Take care

  • I did the helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungles and that was wonderful. I also did the seaplane flight up to the Horizontal Falls and the subsequent jet boat ride ! WOWEE!! LOL

  • This one was also the Ord River as was the previous photo of the rock
