We visited the Walyunga National Park yesterday – it’s about 70 kms from our home and about 80 from Perth, Western Australia. We thought that after some good winter rains the river would be running well and we were not disappointed.
This is the Swan River, just a kilometer or so down from the meeting point of the Avon and Brockman Rivers, which combine to become the Swan. It then flows on, passing Bells Rapids and Middle Swan before working it’s way down to Perth and emptying out into the Indian Ocean at Fremantle.
Two weeks ago this was a section of the annual and world renowned white water Avon Descent. This is a two day event that attracts over 800 entries and is incredibly demanding of both men and their boats. It also attracts thousands of spectators and we wouldn’t have got near this area then.
