I’m going back a long time here because I can remember taking this shortly before we came out to Australia, so it must have been around 1969. It was taken on Kodak colour transparency film (Kodachrome??) and is the little – and very old – village of Allerford which from memory is in the English west country county of Somerset.
This old Packhorse bridge has stood there for centuries and must have been photographed by thousands of people in it’s time. This was my first visit to the area and we had my parents with us – in fact that’s my mother on the bridge!

Now we’re going back! This is a beautiful photo, Peter. You are doing an excellent job with your new scanner.

  • Thanks very much Adrian. England is full of beautiful old villages and this one is even mentioned in the fabled Domesday Book, which makes it VERY old.

Beautiful scene Peter. Lots of enjoyment scanning those old images, I know it was a lot of fun and nostalgia a few years ago when I tackled my slide collection!

  • Thanks George. I started scanning my slides a few years ago using a transparency adaptor on a flatbed scanner. They didn’t come out all that well. A few weeks ago I bought a dedicated 5 mps slide scanner on Catch of the Day and haven’t stopped since! LOL Regards, Peter

lovely scene Peter hope to see things like this when we travel to the uk in july

  • Hi Carol. How are you keeping? Lucky you going to England. Try to get down to the West Country (although it will be busy in July) and you’ll get scores of old villages like this to photograph. Many thanks for looking in and for the nice words. Peter

This is a lovely shot Peter , I wouldn’t mind having a go at painting this . X

  • Thanks Irene and be my guest! Go for it. Did you ever see the painting Hillie did of one of my photos of Southern Queensland?

    No I didn’t , I don’t see Hilary much now what has happened to her . ?
Could you send me the picture so I can have a go at it . If my painting skills every come back , I seem to be having a painters block at the moment .

  • I may have confused you here. I was referring to Hillie (rightasrain) NOT Hillary who, incidentally, I haven’t seen anything of lately. The best way to get the picture would be to take a screen shot of it (Print Screen on your keyboard) then paste it into your photo editing software and print it out to the size your prefer for painting from. But I will happily send it to you if that’s what you would prefer.
