The Hawkesbury River and Brooklyn by

Looking down from the old Pacific Highway to Brooklyn. We had just stopped at a fruit stall to replenish our supplies and the owner had directed us to this lookout. I am so glad he did and we spent a long time just standing and gazing at this scene.
The location is about 40 or more kms north of Sydney but if you take the main highway you won’t see it. I have a feeling I read not long ago that the old road had split open. Was I dreaming this or did it really happen?
This was taken in 1979 on Agfacolor transparency film

This is a great shot Peter. The area has changed dramatically all through here now though with the freeway and its always sooo busy with traffic – I don’t think there are any fruit stalls around these days, at least none on the freeway. The old Pacific Highway is still in tact although during the June storm of two years ago the road just south of Gosford did wash away with the loss of a family of 4, so tragic. It has been repaired again now.

  • Thank you very much for all that info Bev which is very interesting. That wash away was obviously what I was thinking of. The freeway is an incredible road to drive, especially when you’re pulling a caravan. Going through those deep cuttings the cross winds play havoc and you really do need to exercise a whole lot of extra care. I remember that even in 1987 we still preferred to take the old road whenever possible.

Beautiful spot, so well represented here Peter (like Bev, I know the area well!).

  • Many thanks Rosalie. The memory of all of this area will stay with us for a long time – the beauty of the Hawkesbury is unforgettable.

Lovely sight Peter. I wonder if it looks that clean now. John

  • Thanks John. Judging by what the ladies above tell me it all seems to have changed quite dramatically. Only to be expected I suppose, but still a shame. Peter

I am so enjoying these memories around Australia.

  • You’re too kind Kala – thanks very much. I am enjoying having my own memories revived, too, as almost every slide tells me a story of some sort. Peter
