A sure sign of the approaching festive season is when the West Australian Christmas Tree (nuytsia floribunda) comes out in all it’s glory. This beautiful specimen is just beside the road a couple of hundred metres from our house but the bush is full of them and has gone from the vivid yellow of a few weeks ago to a bright orange, which will last for about the next 5/6 weeks if we’re lucky. They are parasitic in that they feed off other nearby trees. In times past aborigines used to eat the roots, which were said to taste rather like candy.Sadly two of the best ones in our area were blown over in a violent winter storm.

I found one on the way to Baldivis (from Singleton) which is looking wonderful.

  • We actually saw our first two of the season just south of Mandurah when we were on our way down to the south west two weeks ago.

Ah yes, the West Aussie Christmas Tree! What a beauty it is! well done, Peter. :)

It was one of the very first things I remember so well, following our arrival in Fremantle on the PO Iberia, when dad drove us down to Albany and our new home. All along the way were these amazing orange trees!

  • Thanks Annemarie. They seem to have come alive all at once and now the whole area is a mass of orange from these and blue from the Jacarandas. Peter

  • Thanks Catherine. It’s not only this one either because the lovely Jacarandas are all in flower now, including the one in our front garden! Hugs

I am learning so much “Aussie” from you. “Oh beauty” is still my favorite one. “Cracker” is a derogatory term for a white person in America. It also just means a “cracker.” The crispy bread thing. Is that weird or what? Hugs!XX

  • “Cracker”, “Ripper”, “Beauty” all mean the same here – ie a thing of beauty!! But don’t get me on to telling you Aussie slang – you might not like it!! LOL Hugs

Great pic Peter, yes we know Christmas is upon us when we see them flowering around us too.
How is the bubblesite going? I finally figured out how to get mine going!

  • Hi Susan. yes, they are a great sight aren’t they? The bubblesite is going fine thanks although I made one glaring error and all my photos got added to the FEATURED section – and cannot be deleted!! LOL
