This Galah posed nicely for me this morning in our back garden. I was trying out one of the new cameras that the Insurance Co. have sent to replace the ones that were stolen a few weeks ago. It’s an Olympus SP560UZ and it replaces my excellent Olympus C750UZ The UZ stands for ultra zoom and this one has an 18x zoom so I was able to take this photo from about 10’ away, although these particular birds know us well and let us get to within touching distance if we wish..

Glad they replaced your Olympus, what they doing about your R1, Oh like your Galah.

  • I got the Sony Alpha 350 dslr as a replacement for the R1. Lenses are not so good of course but it’s got a nice feel to it and also has the same type of swivel screen, so will just have to do. I might upgrade the kit lenses in time though. Thanks for looking in. Peter

Thanks Irene. We give them a feed of parrot seed most days so they are regular visitors to our garden. They are always in pairs and it’s not so bad when only two roll up but sometimes they bring the whole darned family and there can be as many as 20 scratching around. When that happens I go up and take the feeder away and tell them to behave or else!! Peter

What an awesome Galah, and a great camera the Olympus is, what an amazing zoom it has too. Well done Peter. Don.

  • Thanks mate. They are actually sending me another one too but that is not officially released in Australia until about the middle of this month. From what I can make out it is pretty much the same camera but with a 20x zoom and 10 mps plus will shoot RAW which this one doesn’t. Peter

Excellent detail Peter – I have had 3 Olympus P&S cameras in the past and loved every one of them.

  • Thanks very much Rosalie. Nice little camera to use but it feels so light in my hands after the weight of the R1. I’ll use the A350 as my main camera and this one as main back up. Peter

This is a really great photo, Peter. I’ll be interested to know what you think of your SP560 once you’ve settled into using it. If money was no object, I think my favoured camera choice would be the soon-to-be-released SP565. With a 20x zoom and a 10mp picture cabability, it overcomes the only drawbacks I find with my 4mp Camedia 770UZ. For my purposes, I just don’t see the need for a DSLR (at this stage)! ;-))

  • Thanks very much Jan. I think I may have told you that I am also getting the SP565 as part of the insurance deal. I’ve read the specs and it is not greatly different from the 560 with 2 extra mps and an extra 2x zoom. The big plus is that it will shoot RAW which the 560 wont, despite all the claims to the contrary. I’ll let you know how it goes in the fullness of time! Peter

What a beautiful parrot! Are they similar to a cockatoo? Great capture! I’m so sorry to hear about your loss, but the replacement camera is pretty fine!- C.

That replacement camera is going to be a wonderful back-up to your DSLR, it certainly captured every scrap of feather detail on this handsome visitor to your garden, a beautiful avian portrait Peter and YES I have never heard of a galah but would welcome them to my garden any day of the week, well done my friend,
    Regards, Rod.
