Bridge over troubled waters
Before the boardwalk and bridge were constructed about 12 years ago people (mostly fishermen) had a rough scramble over the rocks and then a very precarious walk across this “canal” on a rather rickety plank of wood, with but a single length of rope to serve as a handrail. Now every man and his dog can get there and a popular pastime is to just lean on the handrail and watch the ocean as it slams into the rocks and sends mini tidal waves rushing up underneath the bridge. I have spent many an hour doing just that, with camera clicking away almost non stop and this is where just a couple of weeks ago I finally got the sunset picture I had been after for 20+ years. Canal Rocks – as the area is known – came by it’s name from the channels, or canals, that had been formed in the rocks by countless eons of wave erosion. It is now part of the Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park. Over the years several unwary fishermen have been swept off the rocks by sudden and unexpected King waves and never seen again
.

Well now a bridge! Tiem I went down again.
Great shot.

WOW, it IS a long time since you were last there! This would have been built some time between September ‘94 and August ‘96. Glad you like it and many thanks. Peter
Jan Richardson
Wow! This is my sort of place, Peter! Terrific shot too! If that was on the east coast, I’d be betting there were drummer in that deep, fast-flowinig canal.
georgieboy98 replied
Thanks very much Jan. It’s actually not very deep under the bridge and it’s crystal clear so any fish would stand out like Grannie’s tooth! I’m delighted that you like it . Peter

Brilliant shot looks a great place to spend sometime enjoying a favourite pastime of just watching the waves so relaxing i can see why a few fishermen have perished here.
georgieboy98 replied
Very many thanks Tony and good to see you mate. I just had a quick look through your portfolio and you have several pictures that are after my own heart so I’ve added you to my watch list to remind me to come back and take a closer look. Best wishes from the golden west, Peter

Fantastic , I don’t think I would have wanted to risk life and limb to get accross there before . I think it looks a lot safer doing it this way . fabulous shot of this wonderful place.
georgieboy98 replied
Thanks very much Irene. I remember back in 1994 my Blackpool brother in law and his wife were over here and we took them to this spot. Needless to say his eyes lit up when he saw that old plank and he was half way across before his wife realised what was happening. “Clever clogs” was the most repeatable of the things she called him when he got back!! Take care, Peter

I have just flashed on your profile page and seen that picture the one at the top of your list and had to go back and look again , it is almost identical to the one I posted which I did in Bedgerlert . What a coincidence.
georgieboy98 replied
This is two or three times that you and I have shown almost identical pictures! People will start talking!! LOL Incidentally have you had the chance of seeing any of the photos from my Devonian friend Rod (rodsfotos) yet? They will, I know, appeal greatly to you. Peter

A great title and moreso a great image, very good tones and definition in that choppy water under the little wooden bridge, I can imagine I’d spend some time on the bridge looking down at the water splashes below me then scramble over those rocks exploring and rockpooling like I used to so many years ago, beautifully captured Peter,
Regards, Rod.
georgieboy98
Thanks very much Rod and I can well imagine you would have liked it back in the days of the wooden plank!! Then it really was a scramble across the rocks to get there! This is another of those places that is a few kms off the main road and, as a result, never seems to get many visitors. Certainly the surfies don’t go there because there’s no beach sufficiently exposed to the ocean swells. And most people who DO visit seem to walk around exploring for an hour and then leave! I’ll upload two or three more photos of this place that show different aspects of it. Best wishes, Peter

Ahhhh Peter! Now you’ve got me singing that song in my head and I’m just about to go to bed:) LOL. Great capture though, and I particularly love the light in this scene, the sea looks rough. Julie wouldn’t like that bridge, but I could stand and watch the waves all day long. Marvellous! An instant FAV. Don.
georgieboy98 replied
Hope it didn’t keep you awake all night! I know what it’s like to get a song fixed in your head! Thanks for the great comment and also for the fave – it’s a spot we never tire of visiting. Best wishes, Peter
