Sunset over Canal Rocks

Sunset over Canal Rocks

We have stayed close to this magical place many times over the years but have never before been lucky enough to see a sunset – there has either been dense cloud that has blocked the sun out completely or else there has been no cloud at all. The first evening of last week’s stay changed all that and there was just enough cloud to produce a sight worth seeing. Canal Rocks is in the south west of Western Australia in the Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park about 300 kms south of Perth. The only downside was that the mighty Indian Ocean was almost flat calm! Can’t win ‘em all

You have a double bunger here mate! Glorious sunset and that foreground is magic. Well done!

  • georgieboy98 replied

A double bunger??? I can’t have lived because I’ve never come across that expression before! Mind if I borrow it and use it myself occasionally?? LOL Thanks heaps Rosalie – should I have added that this was NOT taken with an R1 ?? Hee hee. Peter

  • Rosalie Dale IPA

    Rosalie Dale IPA

Gosh I thought ‘double bunger’ was a colloquialism that was pretty generic!!!! Sorry – means ‘two for the price of one’ and yes, you are welcome to use it any ol’ time you like Peter!

  • georgieboy98 replied

I’ve always known it as Double Whammy! But what’s in a name? LOL

I think hte movement of the water you have here is much nicer than a dirty big wave, it is a well balanced shot and a delight to see

  • georgieboy98 replied

Thanks heaps Mik, both for the comment and the fave. I agree with what you say but was still a wee bit disappointed that the ocean wasn’t a bit rougher!! LOL Peter

You’ve done it again, Peter!! This is just fantastic! such a beautiful golden sunset and I love the texture and effect of the water in the foreground. :)

  • georgieboy98 replied

Thanks a million Annemarie – I had been longing for this shot for over 25 years but the occasion never arose before last week, despite many visits. Take care, Peter

You’ve totally outdone youself with this one Peter – absoluetly gorgeous capture. If it doesn’t get featured somewhere I’d be very surprised. Cheers, S.

  • georgieboy98 replied

Aw thanks so much Sandra. But it was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time with the right camera. You don’t get much time for experimenting in a situation like this but I still managed about a dozen different settings! Best wishes, Peter

  • Jan Richardson

    Jan Richardson

Absolutely gorgeous, Peter! A very dramatic shot. the sea is about right for balance, I think. If it had been rougher, it might have overpowered, rather than enhanced, the sunset. Well done!

  • georgieboy98 replied

Thanks very much Jan. Yes, the more I think about it the more I am inclined to agree about the sea – it’s just that it is SO exciting when it’s really rough!! LOL Peter

I have missed some beautiful work, i see. The sunset is just amazing. I love the way the water is spashing on the rocks. i didn’t know that Australia was on the Indian Ocean. I learned something new today. Excellent work, peter. Hugs!! Lori

  • georgieboy98 replied

Hi Lori and many thanks indeed. Our side – Western Australia – is on both the Indian and the Southern Oceans whereas the eastern side is on the Pacific. Hugs, Peter

Magic colours Peter. The white of the water in the fg adds nice contrast. John

An outstanding capture of such a beautiful sunset Peter and for me what makes it so special is the detail and contrast of the water motion in the foreground, perfectly captured my friend and a FAV for me,
    Regards, Rod.

  • georgieboy98 replied

Very many thanks Rod. I had to take this hand held because I was standing on a very narrow wooden bridge where there just wasn’t room to erect a tripod. To get a practical shutter speed I had to open the aperture as wide as possible and even that only gave me 1/30th. Fortunately I was able to hang the camera round my neck and then rest it on the flat handrail of the bridge and open the swivel LCD screen to look down on it – rather like the old twin lens reflex cameras of days gone by. I was pleasantly surprised that the water came out so well and am delighted that you liked it enough to fave it. Best wishes, Peter

I’ve stayed at Dunsborough Peter, so it’s possible I have seen this. It’s a beautiful area. But it’s been a while – gosh it’s close to 20 years now – why does time fly so fast?!? Seems like yesterday.

  • georgieboy98 replied

You certainly wouldn’t know Dunsborough now – it’s no longer the sleepy little place it was. But the most important shop – the Bakery – is still trading!! Peter

Wonderful shot Peter. With these images you have to be lucky with the weather but even then, it’s the operator who pushes the button.

  • georgieboy98 replied

Many thanks Jay. You’re right about the weather – the number of times we’ve tried to get this shot doesn’t bear thinking about. Usually what clouds there have been during the day have all blown away by sunset – and without clouds at that time you have no picture! Peter

This is a breathtaking shot! such depth of colour, such drama…. beautiful work! Can’t believe the story on how you got the shot! be careful.

  • georgieboy98 replied

Thanks very much Wendi and I am so glad that you like it. All of the coast around this area can be pretty treacherous at times and you fish at your peril! King waves can come up literally out of nowhere and even experienced fishermen have been swept away. But isn’t that often the case with beauty spots? All best wishes, Peter

This is beautiful Peter and its great to look at alot of photos that I can relate to. The south coast is very pretty it is, and your photgraphy is beautiful too. We live in Bunbury so visit these places frequently. I only have a basic point and shoot camera and my dream is to get an SLR in the next 12 months..that will be exciting. Then I can get some beautiful pics like yours!! Cheers and have a great day. Caroline

  • georgieboy98 replied

Thanks very much for the visit and the lovely words Caroline and I’m sorry it’s taken so long to reply. I’ve just had a look through your portfolio and you have some beautiful shots – just remember it’s the camera that takes the photo but it’s the photographer who sets it up and composes it. In recent times I’ve seen great pictures taken with a very old and basic box camera and I’ve also seen some very indifferent photos taken with an expensive dslr. You’ve got nothing at all to worry about I can assure you. Peter

Hi and how nice to have a visit from you. Your comments are greatly appreciated, especially coming from a person of the sea, such as you. From what I have seen of your portfolio your photos a definitely worth a longer, lingering look and I shall be doing just that within the next two or three hours. All best wishes from the land down under, Peter
