As I walked by, I looked into his face,
Man standing, hand stretched, so I moved with haste,
“Can you spare a dime”, is his reply,
“Need to eat or I shall die.”
I continued walking, looking back,
Didn’t give a cent, or cared what he lacked,
Don’t touch me! Don’t even come close!
Have a new suit, high heels like most,
Other workers indeed!
People like me,
Who take their work so seriously,
Have to rush to work. Don’t care about you,
You are homeless. Just a silly goon!
Why don’t you work? Why do you beg?
Your clothes haggard, dirty, and rags,
I stop for no one, have to earn my money,
Don’t have time to give out charity,
I love my money, love my wine,
Living wealthy is so fine,
Stop homeless people pleading for my money,
My almighty dollar, my currency.
Looked into his eyes, someone familiar,
Didn’t know he was my brother,
Now I’m crying all the time,
Since I couldn’t spare a dime,
Hadn’t seen him in such a long time,
He never used drugs, smoked or had wine,
So I know he needed money for food,
How could I be so rude?
Had to go back and apologize,
Let him know I didn’t realize,
I shouldn’t judge a person’s need,
He only asked for money to feed,
His weary soul, weakened indeed!
Now I know some people really need to eat,
That lives on the street.
Some just lost there houses,
Have no where else to go, high prices,
Can’t look down on my sisters and brothers,
One day it could be me or some others.
Do you ever really look at the homeless face that begs you for money? Never look down on a person just because he/she is homeless. Examine why they are. There may be people who are homeless due to bad habits that you may not want to encourage, but not everyone. Some people are really hungry and need to eat or are jobless, penniless and can use your support just until they get on their feet. Next time, look into their face. Don’t just walk away.
