Aye, there be Dragons! by George Petrovsky

While taking a walk along the banks of the Wingecarribe River in Berrima, the small historic 1830s town in the Southern Highlands of NSW, I was brought to a stop. The eagle eye of fellow RB’er Rosalie Dale spotted this water dragon lizard* sunning itself on a rock. (*To be correctly identified).

We had to move very slowly so as not to disturb it, and I managed to get close enough to “Lizzie” to take a shot with my lens at the maximum 70mm. No time to play with camera settings – this was taken in Landscape mode and the picture was given a fair bit of a cropping. View Larger – if you dare!

D80, Sigma 17-70mm lens @ 70mm, 1/125 sec @ f 5.6, ISO 100, Pattern metering, Landscape mode, Auto Exp & WB. Cropped and processed in PSE3.

An old photographer and his dog trying to find what turns a photograph into a worthwhile picture. Perhaps try to take a worthwhile photograph in the first place? The digital darkroom is a creative, fascinating place. If only I could learn to use it and the cameras I have to best effect… I love “mucking around”, as you can see!

Now, you know all my stuff is Copyright If you try and pinch any of it, I’ll jump through your screen and rip your bloody arms off!

    Hello friend Georgy
What an excellent composition and lovely natural colours!
    Spot on friend

  • Thanks for visiting John – glad you like “Lizzie”! That was the last glaring look she (?) gave me before jumping off the rock and heading for the river. Lucky to have got this shot! :)george

Super detail, and congratulations on avoiding the shadows! A real poser, this one!

  • Thanks for spotting “Lizzie” in the first place, Rosalie! Yes, being able to get a side on shot before she scampered off was a bit of luck. In the full length images, details are partly lost in shadow – part of its natural camouflage. This meeting with nature made the walk even more enjoyable! :)george

That is one fierce looking little fellow George!!!
Wonderfully well captured – and even more so considering it was shot-from-the-hip!!!

  • G’day Ken! Yes, it’s a bonus being able to get this close in the bush. These lizards, methinks, are the ones who puff up their “beards” to make themselves look more fearsome. This one didn’t feel it was being threatened – just mildly annoyed at having its reptilian reverie in the sun being interrupted! This was indeed a lucky shot. Ideally, I would have put the camera into Portrait mode and asked “Lizzie” to do a number of poses for me! :)george

yeah you dd get pretty close with a 70mm haha – i love these guys. mum has one in her backyard and at times it goes a beautiful shade of red. great catch george !

  • G’day Dean – thanks for the fave! I wasn’t able to sneak up, as it was giving me “the eye”! A 300mm lens may have only done a similar job before Lizzie dived into the grass. I’ve not seen these change colour!

S/He didn’t mind being your model. George! Cool closeup!

  • Thanks very much, Nikolay. This was a lucky shot, as I was advancing slowly, trying to get close with what was a relatively short lens. Then, instinct triumphed over vanity and posing and she scampered off into the grass. I’m sure “Lizzie” was a lady! :)george
