This morning, after weeks of rain, the sun came out at sunrise! Since this has been a rare event, I decided to take a walk around my friend’s property to see what I could see. Of course, Jessie came along for the walk, and wherever she goes, her friend and mine, Rusty, has to come along. They were rolling in the dewy grass, pausing only to check out a distant magpie. I was rolling in the dewy grass, waiting for some light to shine on this mushroom – a type I had not seen here before and can’t identify, the long spindly stalk being unusual.
Nikon D80, Sigma 17-70mm OS lens @ 24mm, “Portrait” setting ( why not?)1/60 sec @ F 4.0, ISO 100, Pattern metering, Auto Exposure and WB. Cropped to 3:4 format in PS Elements 3.
Beautiful image, George! Love the tall fungi in the for ground. Which looks like a Macrolepiota sp. By the way I like the story and to hear you through so much effort for a great shot ;o)) Do not forget to enter this image into the FUN-gi challenge!!
Maybe the dogs are pretending to be truffle hunters! Gorgeous shot George, love the light falling across the image, and it just shows what you can achieve when you get down to my level…. :-)
Thanks Enivea – this isn’t truffle country, but all manner of native flowers and mushies grow amongst the humus rich grass. In this rare early morning venture, on a non rainy morning, I had to get into the prone position to try and get a sense of height for this unusual specimen. Good fun, but the dogs also found me amusing being down below even Jessie level! :)george
what a fun image…any time I hike with pups they roll ON THE MUSHROOMS…lol I’m going to go with a variety of Lepiota here…..the skirt on the stem is leading me that way…as well as the color of the gills and spore showing around the ring. Don’t know WHICH…but…
Thanks for your visit and comments Carla – much appreciated! Not always easy to identify fungi apart from the obvious ones and I’ve never seen one of these before. Thanks for your ID of this one. :)george
Nice shot and exercise to take it.I shouldn’t eat it in any case!!
Merci bien Gilberte! No, this one will not appear on the menu. Wild unknown mushrooms are too dangerous – two people recently expired after eating some! :)george

hehe…WISH we could train dogs to truffle hunt!
They apparently do it in some countries – I’m not sure about here. These two are too busy hunting kangaroos and wombats in the bush! :)george
