Artist's Description

Another beautiful day today, so we went for a walk along the Greenock Cut at the Clyde Muirsheil Park near Inverkip, Scotland. While trying to photograph dragonflies in flight I noticed this Large Red Damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula) caught in water weed and close to drowing. I howked him out of the water using a reed and he sat on it quite happily wiping his face dry and letting the sun dry his wings. (You can tell it’s a “he” because he has red eyes). My long-suffering wife held the reed steady while I took the picture hand-held in the abundant available light. I used a 60mm macro lens on a Nikon D300s set at 1/500s at f6.3 and 200 ISO. Taken on 15 August 2010.
