Taking another saunter along the stretch of the Ayrshire Coastal walk between West Kilbride and Largs on a recent sweltering hot day I came across a collection of dragonflies basking in the dappled sunshine in one of the wooded sections. I’ve always been impressed by the detail of these wonderful animals. You only get a minute amount in focus at this distance, so I took two photographs with my Nikon D300s and macro lens. The first concentrated on his cute wee smile, then I edged the camera forward about a millimetre and took another, concentrating on the gorgeous compound eyes. The computer later combined these into one image using “focus stacking” software.

This is my 55th “Picture of the Day” in Glasgow’s “Herald” newspaper.

Loving to live in the West of Scotland, I’m a wee bit obsessed by the magnificent scenery and nature all around me. I’m particularly keen on the varying moods of the sky and sea, and in macro photography.
