Cormorants are very prevalent all around the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Expert fishermen, they spend most of the day out on the ocean, diving for fish. When evening comes, they come ashore to roost for the night, though not usually on an old sawed-off tree stump. I think this one was contemplating one last foray before the rather stormy night fell. I shone a small flashlight on the stump to get a bit of illumination without scaring him away, they can be very wary if you get too close. In the background are the Olympic Mountains in Washington State across the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Stunning photo! I like taking photos of cormorants too.
They are really photogenic birds! I love trying to catch them in the morning and evening when they tend to roost a bit longer. Glad you liked it!

Excellent capture, George !
Congrats on the feature, as well. :)
Good morning Stan! It was a bit of a fluke, I didn’t expect the bird to come flying in and perch. Sometimes I win..lol! Thanks for the kind words!

Absolutely marvellous, George. And such an amazing background, too. Very nicely captured, my friend!
You’re too kind Mike..but I’ll accept it! lol! I was taking a bunch of scenes as the sun went down, kind of a dreary moody evening, but then that pink glow started and the bird came along and it all came together. Sometimes it really does work!
