Ocean Waterfall by George Cousins

Small (21.9" x 16.4")

Another interesting feature at Botany Bay, at the end of the road near Port Renfrew, on the rugged outer (west) coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. A massive natural breakwater curves out into the Pacific Ocean and protects the small sandy beach from being totally eroded by winter storms. At one place, about half way out the length, there is a large hollow in the crown of the rocks. The incoming ocean swells crash into the outer face of the rocks and the upsurge of water gradually fills the hollow until one final swell causes it to overflow. The result is this waterfall, which causes the hollow to empty.
Then the sequence starts all over again, but since it depends upon the size and height of the outer surf, the waterfall varies in volume and frequency. Sometimes it can be quite small, other times, it looks like this image.
I took about 50 shots over a period of about one hour, and no two are the same.

Pleasure to join a good quote; With an eye made quiet by the power of harmony, and the deep power of joy, we see into the life of things.

Beautiful and interesting place George. I would love to see it myself.

  • Hi Teresa, it’s one of those places off the beaten track. Almost a 1 km. hike to get to it, downhill, which makes the same thing, uphill, a bit of a! We salvaged some driftwood poles to help us out :>))

George this is quite spectacular my friend. I would love to stand there and hear the oceans roar as it does this. A Fave:>)) Leslie

  • It really is an interesting place Leslie. I was quite fascinated by this natural phenomena, I just sat and took a whole lot of pictures. Jann did a water-colour painting of the cove with the beach and the rock outcropping. When everything falls into place exactly right, there’s quite a sound and a whole lot of water. Other times it’s just like a little brook in the mountains. Thanks for the fave, my dear!

Awesome work, love the movement, it looks really dramatic!

  • Glad you liked it, it’s rather an unusual place and you have to be there when the ocean conditions are just!
