Road with a Twist by George Cousins

Currently unavailable for purchase

The town of Osoyoos in southern British Columbia, Canada, lies on a beautiful lake and in a valley which is one of Canada’s finest vineyard areas. The dry sunny climate causes almost desert conditions.Osoyoos is situated on the east-west Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) with a steep ascent out of the Okanagan Valley in either direction. The Crowsnest headed east begins with an 18 km switchback up the flank of the Okanagan Highland with a 685 m rise and this picture was taken from half-way up the slope.
It’s a fun drive as long as you don’t mind constantly turning the steering wheel. And there are a few pull-offs where you can take a shot like this.

I know this road. When we lived in Kelowna we spent a lot of time in Osoyoos. I enjoyed doing the rattle snake hike there. Great shot George!

  • Hi Pam, it’s an interesting place and quite pretty but waaaaaay too hot for! The first time I stopped there in 2006 I almost cooked:>)
Jann isn’t keen on heights and when we first went up to the top of the mountain and stopped to look, she was pretty edgy..but eventually got over it!

Marvellous capture, George! I’d be twitching by the time I got to the bottom! :o)

  • This one isn’t as bad as some others in the actual Rockies. The hills around Osoyoos aren’t that high, but this one is quite steep so the road is a bit hairy.

for a moment I thought this was the switchback to takakakakakaw Falls, George.
They are exciting to drive, but I prefer to be a passenger, LOL
    Great shot

  • It’s impossible to get a complete shot of this hill as far as I could tell on several trips. This is about half way down. Going up, you have to get to the top because the view is on the wrong side of the road, but there’s a great viewpoint at the top. I’ll post some from there.
Jann is the same, she won’t drive those roads!
BTW, where is Tak ……… Falls??.Sounds like whoever named them had a bad stutter!

George, Nice shot…a similar desert road being the Moki Dugway.

  • Hello Phil, good to see you again. Thanks for the kind comment. Just Googled Moki Dugway, didn’t know where it was, but I see it’s a bit of a twister as well!

you’ve never seen Takakaw Falls? It’s in Yoho NP. It’s the tallest waterfall in Canada

  • Well, I’m gobsmacked! We must have driven right past the access road, probably in the midst of rain and fog, because we did go into Emerald Lake just past Field and it was not bad, the rain stopped . . We were going to try for Lake O’Hara but we met some people who told us the fire road was in really bad shape and advised not to try it. They had turned back with a Land Rover so we took them at their word, after seeing the mud and dirt on their!
Well, there will have to be another day!!!

I can’t believe it either, you have seen every road in your travels, I thought you were kidding when you said you didn’t know Takkakaw. Well, you have to come to next year’s M&G :-)))
