Artist's Description

Race Rocks is a small collection of rocks, reefs and shoals off the south west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, at a relatively narrow area of the Strait of Juan De Fuca. It is one of the two oldest lighthouses on the west coast of British Columbia, the other being Fisgard Lighthouse at the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour, a short distance away towards the City of Victoria.
The lighthouse was built in 1859-1860, and was first lit on December 26, 1860, and has been in operation ever since. It is constructed of granite topped with sandstone. The area around the rocks is now a Marine Ecological Reserve administered by Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific. The light itself was automated in 1997.
In the background are the Olympic Mountains in Washington State. The Strait connects the ports of Washington and British Columbia to the open Pacific Ocean.
