Babe was the runt of the litter, so she was given to us as a wedding present..neat way to get rid of a problem! But with a ton of love she became our first “child”, pre-dating our first real one by about a!Blossoming into a beautiful animal with a great disposition, we couldn’t have loved her more. She traveled innumerable miles with us, all over the continent, never a problem, always a perfect baby-sitter, and after 13 years she left us.
She looks a little frowsy here because she just had a bath, and the grooming was yet to come. As most will know, she was an American Cocker Spaniel.

This was taken about December 1955, in Newmarket, Ontario.
The camera was an Exakta Varex 35mm.SLR, f2.0 50mm. Biotar lens (I still have them).
Film was Kodachrome ASA 10, exposure probably 1/100 @ F6.3
Scanned 49 years later with a Canoscan 4000DPI scanner.

She’s a beauty, George. What a great portrait of Babe and what a wonderful story to go with it. This would be Trixie, an English Cocker Spaniel, about 3 years after your shot was taken. Mum was a registered breeder, so, at times, the house was full of Cockers!

  • Hi Mike..many thanks, and quite a coincidence. My Mother-in-Law was a registered breeder also, that’s how we got her.I was skeptical about starting married life with any kind of pet because I knew I’d be doing a lot of traveling, but there was no way I could resist her. The in-laws house was often full of them too, now and then I was the! I could tell a few stories…..:)
Great pic of your Mom and you kids, and of course Trixie..great to look back in time:)

Good one, George! Turned out very well indeed!

  • Hi David, glad you liked it. Stood up quite well over 49 years from shoot to! She was one of those dogs that would just fall right into a pose, you just had to be ready:)
