The tall ship Picton Castle, registered in the Cook Islands, in the South Pacific,is owned and operated by the Windward Isles Sailing Ship Company, Ltd. Her home port is Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. Her purpose is deep-ocean sail training and long-distance education.
She is a completely refitted barque,179 feet overall, with riveted steel hull, clear oiled-pine decks, steel masts, and wooden and steel yards. In addition to 12,450 square feet of canvas sail, she has a 690 hp diesel engine for occasions when sailing is not feasible. Her on-deck galley has an 1893 cook stove ,the same as was used on commercial sailing ships 100 years ago.

    Awesome capture George!!

  • Many thanks Al.. I have always loved ships of all kinds, and I try to get to the gatherings whenever I can. I’ve been on board this one several times when I go home to Nova Scotia.

A gorgeous sailing ship George!! It must be something to see in person!! That festival would have been a marvel to experience!! Well done my friend!! ‘Them were the days!!’

  • Hi Blair, glad you liked it. The Halifax festivals are about 4 years apart, but depends upon when they have the cross-Atlantic tall ship races. We had one last year in Victoria, and I think they have them in Seattle now and then, though I’ve never been to one. Great to see 30 or more in one place at the same time!

    Great Shot !

  • Hi Dorothy, and first of all, Happy Birthday! A few days late but have another happy one, we can all use a couple of them! I’ll be 80 in a few months and remember those WW2 days when I lived on the Atlantic coast and watched the convoys setting sail. We had air raid alarms and blackouts too! Your journal brought back a lot of memories, thanks for sharing it!

What a beauty, George! Magnificent under sail – I haven’t seen that too often.

  • Glad you liked it Mike. She was pretty well hove to under just a few sails, wish I could have got her under full sail. It’s hard to do, since they usually drop most of the sails before entering harbour.

  • Thanks David, glad you liked it. Thanks for the link, I just read it, must confess I didn’t know anything about it before now!
