Jann loves old buildings, and if they have a lot of history attached, so much the better. This is Hatley Castle, a 40-room replica of a 15th.century Edwardian mansion, built in 1908 for James Dunsmuir at Esquimalt, near Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Dunsmuir was a coal and rail baron who also served as Premier and Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.
It was sold to the Federal Government in the late 1930’s,with the proviso that it always be used for educational purposes, becoming Royal Roads Military College, Royal Roads University, and a National Historic Site. With it’s beautiful gardens and site overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca, it’s also a wonderful place to spend time and find peace and enjoyment.
