Artist's Description

The long sloping tongue of the Athabasca Glacier provides a challenging walk for people who want to try to reach the upper ice wall, but there comes a point where enthusiasm dies. A few stalwart souls are still trudging along, with a Snow Coach nearing the end of it’s track also.
The view at this point is somewhat awe-inspiring. The ice wall ahead and farther up the glacier may be up to 1,000 feet thick. It’s been there for millenia. People and machines are so insignificant when surrounded by nature at it’s most overwhelming.

The Athabasca Glacier is one of several which form parts of the Columbia Icefield, in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta,Canada. The Icefield is at the junction of Jasper and Banff National Parks, and readily observed by travelers on the Icefields Parkway.
