Magnolia (Tulip Tree) by George Cousins

I didn’t know if Tulip Tree was the right name or not.
Now I KNOW it’s not, thanks to Rebecca and Irene. It’s a magnolia, even though people around here seem to call them “tulip trees”. It seems that the unopened buds look a lot like tulips, and they also go under several "magnolia"designations in other areas.
The big blossoms appear first, before any leaves, and I found several of them along the edges of a golf course in Victoria, Vancouver Island,British Columbia, Canada, where they come into bloom around the first of April. The only person I could find to ask told me they were “tulip trees”, which I now know seems to be a local term and not really the best one to use. They are one of many early spring flowering trees that all come to blossom at the same time.
Searching on “Tulip Tree” in Google gives tons of information where magnolia is explained as the proper name. Should have done that first!

Looks like magnolias to me go look in my gallery. lovely capture!

  • Thanks Rebecca..I thought it was a magnolia myself (what little I know about!). I found it goes by various names, most with “magnolia” in them, but in some places people call them tulip trees because they feel the unopened buds look like tulips. I found a lot of stuff on the Net which lumped all the names together so it seems to be a localized term, depending a lot on where you live! Thanks for confirming my!!

It’s a Magnolia tree George and they are really beautiful , if you feel the petals they feel like wax.
    A lovely shot x

  • Hi Irene, many thanks for the correction. See my reply to Rebecca above. Should have listened to my sparsely informed intuition in the first!

Beautiful cature of this magnolia, George. They’re such a lovely flower. We have quite a number of them around here, including a beauty in our Memorial Park.

  • Thanks Mike.. when I saw these, I thought they were magnolias but apparently out here they call them “tulip trees”, so I was a bit stumped for the right name. Me being 98% dumb when it comes to flowers and trees..I like the look of them but names were never my big!
