The Cabot Trail is a world-famous scenic drive which encircles the northern part of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia,Canada, and encloses Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
On the western shore of the island, facing the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Trail winds up and down over several mountains and comes back to the sea one more time before turning inland to cross the Island.
This turning point is at Pleasant Bay, a tiny community at the bottom of a winding section of road. I took this image from part way down the slope in early October when the hardwood trees were starting to come into their full autumn splendour. Beyond the last visible section of road is the wilderness, all the way to the far northern tip of the Island, reachable only by boat or very hardy hikers who may venture forth on foot.
October 2005, Sony DSCF828 camera.

Beautiful capture, George! What a wonderful mix of colours and tones!

  • Hi Mike, thanks very much! That was a lucky mixture of bright sunshine and a few shadows from the clouds along with the Fall colours. Once in awhile I manage the right place at the right time..lol!

gorgeous ! I was there when I was very little ..my daughter had been there more times then me lo l

  • Hi Elaine, thanks very much. You must go down and do the Trail yourself, it’s quite an easy trip from Toronto. Two days comfortable driving will get you to Cape Breton. You can do the Trail in a day, stopping quite often for photos, but it’s better to take two. Pleasant Bay is just about the half-way point so would be a good place for an overnight. You’ll really enjoy it!

This is beautiful George! I think I remember you speaking of this trail in another note…definitely would be a worthwhile scenic drive….you’re better than a travel agent! Thanks for capturing and showing! =) And congrats on the feature.

  • Hi reindeer, thank you. I was born and raised on Cape Breton, so I’m very enthusiastic about it’s beauty. The Cabot Trail is rated by the American Bus Association as one of the top drives in North America so it does get lots of accolades.I first went over it when I was in grade school, with the driver of an oil truck..too long ago!
