Artist's Description

This picture was taken in 1953,and things change. This was near the mouth of the Fort George River where it emptied into James Bay, which in turn is at the south end of Hudson’s Bay, on the western shore of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The river is now called the Le Grande and the pristine hinterland which it once drained has been transformed into a series of huge reservoirs for the Hydro Quebec power generating system.
At the time I was operating a survey camp for the Royal Canadian Air Force and this was taken about 6 AM, October 21, 1953. The sun is just rising and the first glaze of ice is forming on the river. It’s quiet, calm, peaceful as only the northern wilderness can be.
The camera was an Exakta Varex 35mm.SLR using Kodachrome film, ASA 10, with a 50mm.Biotar lens probably set close to F.2.8 or so.Exposure time lost in memory!
Scanned in 2004 at 4000dpi with a Canoscan4000US scanner.
