The constantly-changing patterns of the Ross Fountain in the Butchart Gardens, Victoria,Vancouver Island, British Columbia, serve as a lovely backdrop for the array of flowers and plants that line the walkway and viewpoint. The fountain was conceived and built by Ian Ross, grandson of Jenny Butchart, in the deepest part of the sunken garden. This was part of the original limestone quarry which had been worked out. The garden was started by Jenny in 1904. It’s a National Historic Site of Canada and has been visited by millions of people from all over the world.

Taken July 12, 2009 with a Fuji S100FS camera.

A stunning image indeed, I recall on my last visit to Victoria, to see my brother, I was totally memorized by seeing this first hand, well documented, and a sure fav for me as well…Thanks George

  • Thank you Larry, I’m really glad you liked it, and thanks for the Fav. The fountain outlets are programmed so there are a multitude of spray patterns, as you saw yourself, and it’s a problem to try to decide which one to post. They’re all quite beautiful.

  • Hi Stephanie, thanks for the invitation, and I’ll post it immediately. My partner Jann also has some and I’ll have her join also.

Beautiful shot, George!! It’s great to see this area in a different season than what we experienced! I’m a total flower lover, so I’ve always wanted to be here in the spring. But, I have to say that the fall color we experienced was absolutely exceptional & I didn’t feel like I missed a thing!

You’re right..every season is beautiful, and they constantly change the flowers to be in tune with the seasons, so you really get the best of everything for that time of year. As you saw, there are several specific “gardens”..the Sunken,Rose,Japanese,Italian,Mediterranean, etc. and all the “fill-in” spots, so you can pick something if you have limited time. I think the Sunken is the best bet for a quick look, it is the most spectacular for sure. For a flower lover (we are too!) I’d pick early to mid July if you had to pick a time.

    Lovely shot George, nice foreground.

  • Hi Anne, and thank you..much appreciated! I think the fountain is my favourite place in the Gardens, so relaxing, even with people coming and going :)
