Artist's Description

Herring Cove is a little village just a few miles south of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Early settlement seems to have occured around 1790, by Irish-Catholics, some of whose descendents still live in the area.Originally a fishing village, which it still is, it’s becoming a little more developed now as a rural adjunct to Halifax, being only a short drive away and convenient for commuting. Though the cove is very small, it’s quite protected from the open Atlantic Ocean, and quite narrow. This photo shows a fishing set-up with wharves, sheds, racks of lobster traps, and the roof of a lobster fishing boat just visible at the lower right. (The number 19740 is on the mast).
Visiting the Cove is easy, being at the intersection of Route 253 and Route 349, local roads servicing the southeastern side of the Chebucto Peninsula, only about 15 km from downtown Halifax, with trails and lookoffs to explore and see the ocean and the approaches to the harbour.
Taken Sept. 16, 2008 with a Fuji S100FS camera.
