Country Harbour is a long inlet from the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia, Canada, in Guysborough County. One of the interesting things you’ll find on the road that follows the coast and it’s hundreds of islands and inlets, is this cable ferry which carries people and vehicles across the inlet. The 12-car ferry connects Port Bickerton with Isaac’s Harbour North.
The route is about 2,500 feet (760 metres)and the ferry has ramps at both ends, since it has no steering. The original roll-on,roll-off design!
As you see in the photo, a heavy steel cable is anchored at both shorelines and the cable is connected to a mechanism inside the hull. When loaded, the ferry is winched across to the other side.
I know of at least two of these in Nova Scotia, and numerous others still exist in Canada and other countries in the world.
