Every year I try to come back to Cape Breton Island, where I was born and grew up. It will always be home, with it’s wild beauty and sea-bound coasts, the highlands and beaches, and the unspoiled byways and quiet places where the world has not yet intruded.
My partner Jann took this shot of me sitting on a bench at Cabot Park, in the Northern part of the Island. In front of me is a small part of Aspy Bay ,the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, and a little bit of the miles of pristine beaches. This is one of the places where John Cabot possibly landed in 1497 on his historic voyage to the New World. The other possibility is on the coast of Newfoundland. The hills in the background are part of Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

Taken in the autumn of 2006 with a Sony DSCF828 camera.

It always feels to right to go home for a bit.
    Excellent capture of that feeling.

  • Thanks again Estes, I’m hoping to start out across the continent again next week. Home always calls!

Lovely shot, George. Kudos to Jann for capturing the mood of this scene. Kind of felt that way when I returned to Edinburgh after a 33 year absence. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough time to revisit all I wanted.

  • Thanks Mike and I’ll pass along the kudos. She’s an artist and photographer herself and really has a knack for setting the scene to capture the mood. Without her I probably wouldn’t have a picture of me at all! (Maybe not a bad idea ..lol!)

Great capture…so often families end up with no pictures of the family photographer…a nice moment capture here

  • Thanks Della..I don’t have that problem any more, Jann shoots lots of me..one of these days I’ll probably crack the lens..lol!

beautiful image George, I can see your love for your homeland in this photo.

  • Thanks Vickie, I guess it really does do that. I know I felt very happy and peaceful when I was sitting there, and reluctant to move on. Jann took quite a few shots but I liked this one the best.
