Moose are pretty elusive animals and it’s not easy to find one, much less photograph it. But once in awhile, luck favours us all. This time, it was on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, near the village of Ingonish. Around 6:00 PM, in a marshy area not far from the edge of the road, this beautiful animal was peacefully grazing. By being quiet and patient, I was able to get to within about 50 feet, and except for looking at me now and then, he seemed quite unconcerned. Being inside the boundaries of Cape Breton Highlands National Park, maybe he somehow realized he was protected and it was OK to be tolerant.

    Lovely close up! : )

  • Hi Sandy, nice to meet you, and thanks for the comment. We come up to Chemainus many times, it’s our favourite shopping and browsing town, as well as the theatre. Just took a quick glance at your art, but will be more thorough tomorrow. Looks great!

Great capture George !! They sure are mighty !! Awesome title for this one !

  • Hi Sean, and thank you. He was young, but very big, like a draft horse or ox if not bigger. The title just popped into mind as I was doing my little write-up.

Velvet’s gone off the antlers. Don’t think it would have been too much longer and he wouldn’t have had much patience.
    Nice shot, George ! :)

  • Hi Stan, you’re right, the velvet was hanging from his left antler, can’t see it in this shot, but I have another where it’s clearly visible. I waited awhile to see if I got any reaction before I tried to get closer, but he seemed very happy to just be grazing.

Great shot, George. Glad he’s in a protected area.

  • Thanks Mike..yes, so am I. I’m not a hunter, and I’d hate to see anything happen to a beautiful animal like that.
