A really beautiful day at Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada, and a young family are exploring the granite rocks and boulders that separate the little fishing village from the Atlantic Ocean. The rockscape was created by the retreating glaciers of the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago. The ice scraped out gulleys and depressions and created little coves and harbours as it moved, but the granite bedrock endured and the ice simply slid over the surface. It left a panorama of rock ledges, cliffs and boulders as testimony to the forces that created the landscape so long ago.
The village has a permanent population of about 50 fisher-folk, but during the summer it’s inundated with tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world. Only about 30 miles from Halifax, the provincial capital, it’s easily reached by car, bus, taxi, cycling or water tours, and is a wonderful day-hike.
Taken with a Sony DSCF828 camera September 2006

Lovely scene, George, nicely captured. Yet another to add to the list of places to go to!

  • Thanks Mike, glad you liked it. I’ve been going there for 50 years and I always find more scenes to photo. I guess it’s my favourite place anywhere. Hope you get there, I know you’d enjoy it.

Terrific photo George and I can quite see how it’s a favourite place. It would be for me, too. In fact it’s quite similar to one or two areas of our south coast and you have commented on that, too. Great timing in this shot to get that spray, especially as it’s partly concealed by the rocks and you had no way of seeing it build up to give you due warning. Regards, Peter

  • Thank you Peter. Yes, many of your images could easily be taken for Nova Scotia, the coastlines must be quite similar. I noticed a number of spray bursts around those rocks and when the family appeared I just sat and waited with the camera perched on a slab of rock. Getting the spray just right was more good luck than good management. I intended to take a series until I did get a good one, but it happened with the first shot! Sometimes you get lucky..lol!

Beautiful scene! Nicely caught spray of the wave!

  • Hi Linda, and thanks for the nice comment, and for the Feature! Glad you liked it, I was very lucky to get the spray on the first try. Fully expected to take many shots, but things worked out:)
