Artist's Description

The Sunken Garden is one of the oldest and most famous features of Butchart’s Gardens, near Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The gardens were conceived by Jenny Butchart in 1904 as a means of covering the residue of her husband’s worked-out limestone quarry, from which he had operated a very successful cement plant at the turn of the 20th. century. The largest pit in the quarry was gradually turned into the Sunken Garden which soon became world famous and a tribute to this lady’s hard work and imagination. The Gardens are a National Historic Site of Canada and are one of the foremost attractions of the country and especially Vancouver Island.
