Red Rocks at Nipigon Bay by George Cousins

Along the north shore of Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes between Canada and the USA, the highway (No. 17, Ontario, Canada) wends it’s way between many cliffs such as these. I assume the red colour is caused by some form of iron oxide or similar mineral formation, but I could easily be corrected on that. Some people (unfortunately) couldn’t resist leaving their “signatures” on the rocks, but I suppose it gives some perspective. This formation is near Nipigon Bay, Ontario, and was taken in early evening in August, 2006, with a Sony DSCF828 camera.

Great photo of an amazing place. I bet this is popular with the climbing fraternity too. Peter

  • Thanks Peter. There are quite a few kilometers of those cliffs along the highway, with spectacular colours. I have some more that I’ll post at intervals. I’m not a climber but I agree, they should be great for those that like that sort of thing. Very sheer sides and some of them tilt outward as well. I’ll just take pictures :)

Fabulous shot George, wouldn’t mind getting some macro shots from that large rock, I’m sure there would be some interesting textures up close! :D

  • I’m sure you’re right Kathie. I’m hoping to be driving past them later this year and I’ll try to remember to stay awhile and get a better look. Some other RBers have told me about some good look-out spots in the area so we’ll take a bit more time to investigate.
