Artist's Description

On the south west tip of what was then the Territory of Labrador, close to where it joins the wilderness of north-central Quebec Province in Canada, is what was then called Flat Lake. In the early summer of 1953, myself and two others flew here in a seaplane and set up a survey station on top of a very high and steep hill overlooking the lake. Our equipment had to be hauled on packboards to the top, and set up for operation, but we decided to have our living tent on this little peninsula sticking out into the lake. Thus getting some relief from black flies and mosquitoes because of the lake breezes. A bonus was that every evening a family of timber wolves would come down to the shore opposite the tent and serenade us for awhile,It was a wonderful insight into how wolves react together and raise a litter of cubs. Unfortunately they came when it was almost dark, and with Kodachrome film, ASA 10, getting a picture of them proved impossible and wasted a few very precious frames. When I took this picture my friend Phil was watching them on the shoreline just visible at the left, across the water.
Though we were there about 2 months, and climbed up and down the hill every day, we never saw a glimpse of them at any other time.
Taken with an Exakta 35mm.SLR, F2.0 Biotar lens,in the summer of 1953. Scanned in 2005 with a Canoscan 4000DPI scanner.
Labrador is part of the Province of Newfoundland & Labrador.
