October 5, 2005, the slope of North Mountain on the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Nova Scotia, Canada. The highlands of Cape Breton Island provide unbelievably bright colours at the peak of the fall season. Winds off the North Atlantic, with onshore fog in the far distance, combined with bright sunshine, make the slopes turn into carpets of living colour. As an artist friend of mine said," if I did a painting exactly like this, people would say I overdid the colours". Tours come from all over North America specifically to do the Fall Colours Tour of the Cabot Trail.

omg no way are those colours real, its amazing!

  • A lot of people think that way until they go and see for themselves. Every year, many Canadian and American bus companies offer tours of the highlands in late September and to mid-october when the trees are in their most intense colour.I have numerous others which I’ll post gradually.

Just one little word says it all, George; WOW.

  • Thanks Stan, it was quite an amazing sight. I think we hit right on the peak of the fall colours.

    Amazing
as you say you wouldn’t dare paint this image it wouldn’t be believed

  • Thank you, and you’re quite right. The peak of the autumn colours have to be seen to be believed. The camera is probably the next best thing.

Holeee, it’s hard to believe it’s real. What a spectacular view George. Breathtaking.

  • Thanks Teresa. It was hard to believe while we were standing there, I think the Cape Breton highlands have the most intense colours of anywhere I’ve ever been, but you have to get the timing just right. The first Atlantic gale starts to destroy them. There’s about a 3 week window, not very long.
