All along the north shore of Lake Superior, Ontario, Canada, these huge red rock cliffs drop almost straight down to the shoreline. The ones in this photo are at Nipigon Bay, a very pretty spot to stop awhile and enjoy the peaceful scenery, especially in the evening when the sun is a little lower in the sky. Just don’t get too careless along the edges! August 2006, Sony DSCF828 camera.

That north shore is spectacular, isn’t it? As close as this is to home, for me, I’ve spent very little time here. I’ve planned on it for about 25 years but here I am, enjoying your pics. LOL.

  • Glad you enjoy them Stan..lol. It was the first trip that I could take my time and poke along, so it was really worthwhile. There’s still lots of spots we didn’t get to see, maybe next time.

George you should add this one into the challenge for scenic vistas on Lake Superior Gitchigumi!! ( the road up the hill there gives even a better view of the bay! complete with picnic table! )

  • Thanks Laura, I already entered “Nipigon Bay,Lake Superior” into the challenge. Couldn’t decide which one was better. Didn’t notice a road at the time or would have gone up.

just as you pass this on the way to marathon – on the right hand side you will see an almost veritcal road marked only by a little stop sign – go up that road – you can see the whole bay from the cliff in your photo!

Thanks, I hope to take the drive across Canada this summer again, so I’ll watch out for it.

  • Many thanks Marie, it was the first time I’d driven all the way along the north shore, and it’s really a beautiful drive. So many unusual landscapes to explore!
