It’s hard to miss this fellow as you travel along the Trans Canada Highway in Northern Ontario, Canada. The community of Wawa is in the township of Michipicoten. As you turn off the highway into town, you’re greeted by this 28 foot (9 m) steel statue of the Wawa Goose. There’s goose statues all over town, and I had to find out why. Turns out that the name Wawa comes from the Ojibwe word wewe, which means wild goose, so the symbolism is fitting. The area is great for a vacation, surrounded by forests, lakes, rivers and everything that would delight any nature lover. It’s just north of Lake Superior Provincial Park, where you can start to see the wonders of this inland sea.
