The South Shore of Nova Scotia has innumerable beaches, but one of the biggest is Summerville, a favourite with locals and tourists alike. This day in October 2005, the offshore fog bank decided to come onshore, aided by a light wind off the Atlantic. But the air was very mild and the fog lent that soft overlay that blends well with the sand, water and forests. Sony DSCF828 camera.

lovely capture – it looks as tho its rolling along the coast alright and love its gentle quality

  • Thanks Ding, you’re probably familiar with the same weather patterns. Nova Scotia means “New Scotland” and the first settlers were mostly Scots and it seems the geography has a lot in common. I don’t like to drive or sail in fog, but it’s nice for photography.

do you have traditional music too with bagpipes fiddles and the like or is that just my imagination?

  • Yes we do. In Cape Breton Island, where I’m from, there is a Gaelic College which teaches bagpipes, fiddle, dancing, weaving, and has an annual festival.I believe it’s the only such college outside of Scotland. When I was young I used to run the sound system for the festival (Gaelic Mod) There are many singing groups that come from there, probably mostly known over here, but have had really great careers in North America. Rita McNeil, the Rankin Family, The Barra McNeils, Ashley MacIsaac, Natalie McMaster, John Allan Cameron..are any of them familiar to you? In many parts of Cape Breton, and some on mainland N.S., people still speak Gaelic and there are annual Scottish festivals, highland games competitions, and so on. The Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo is now in it’s 26th. year, runs for a week in Halifax in July, and usually sells out every evening (arena seats 10,000) Last year they had 600 pipes and drums in the parade and the main concerts. Said to be the biggest indoor annual show in North America, according to the American Bus Association. Tourists come by the thousands from all over the world just for that.

    Very beautiful scenery!!

  • Hi Bev, and thank you. Fog is a summer institution along the Atlantic coast. Combination of cold ocean, warm air, and the Gulf Stream comes up from the Caribbean and turns off towards Europe just off Nova Scotia, so it can become a fog factory. Usually in July and early August, and stays offshore most of the time. It does give some nice photos when it comes in, especially if it’s low-lying and the sun is still above it. (Not in this photo, but I do have some where that happened).

Hi George _ I dont recognise the names but have a fiddling friend who brings a group of young players to your neck of the woods and I went to a ceilidh with some reciprocal visitors here – great sound and passion for the tunes! Years ago when I went to the edinburgh tattoo I think there was a visiting band too…

Lovely to hear from you and all these great details!

  • Hi Ding,
You probably know the Alexander Brothers, Tom and Jack, they have been coming to Canada for a great many years. They were here in Victoria a short while ago, I think it’s their farewell tour. I first saw them in Halifax around 1965 or so.I’ve a really nice video they made, much of it filmed on tour boats on the lochs. In Cape Breton we also have a Loch Lomond :) The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra has been here several times, they do a really great show. Andy Stewart was another favourite, but I never saw him in person.Oh BTW, I live on Glenelg Ave. and surrounded by streets called Ardmore, Braemar, Dalkeith, Cromarty, Inverness, Aboyne and more, so there’s quite a Scottish influence on the West Coast as well. I almost made it to the Edinburgh Tattoo a few years ago but had to change plans at the last minute. I’ve got several recordings of it.
Really nice to meet folks like you on RB, much like a social site with the common bond of photography. And great people!
