Sand blisters by

Wet sand, pushed up by an incoming wave, washes over dry sand. Air in the dry sand bubbles up through the wet sand as the water receeds, creating bubbles armoured with sand. When the bubbles burst they create a ‘reverse crater’ with the dry sand exposed underneath.
