Not the moon
This image is not astronomical. Quite the contrary but you could imagine this image being taken in space, the background helping a lot.
The moon object is a cross section through a mineral filled or replaced fossil plant stem and is less than 0.3mm in diameter as seen in thin section. The colours come from the use of polarising filters in the microscope. The rock is a very odd limestone which is actually about 50% volcanic ash.

This is taken from a thin section using a polarising microscope with camera attachment – favourite tool of geologists besides the G-pick.
