Broken Glass

Recent pahoehoe lava on the Big Island, Hawaii, fractured as it cooled. Glassy surface layer above, more vesicular below. Edges are razor sharp, if you fall it gets ugly!

Wow! The tones and depth in this one are great!

Hawaii [the Big Island that is] is like that.

This is a great shot. I have to smile when I read your descriptions…you are a geologist to the bone. In fact, you sound so much like my father (who’s a mining engineer) I had to laugh. Even the most beautiful thing has to be analyzed before he will be happy. I’m not criticizing…I love your work, and you remind me of home.

    Thanks Lynda
    Glad you liked the image.
I do like rocks! I really enjoyed visiting the Big Island and walking the volcanoes but the camera I used only had slide film and they are now quite dusty and when they were scanned recently the dust on the images was all too apparent on the results :-(
Maybe I’ll get there again one day.

You need a better scanner and a can of air. Surely those good shots are salvageable…it would be a shame to lose them.

  • GeoGecko replied

Yep. Sad thing was I paid a professional to scan them but they didn’t clean them! Somethings you just have to do yourself, when you get time :-(

Absolutely on target. I’ve learned the hard way.

This geology stuff is kind of fascinating just read this book on Krakatoa, the forces involved are just incredible, nice pic.

  • GeoGecko replied

Thanks Travis – I just got back from the Geotourism conference. The images from Iran and Oman were amazing but what gets most people is the time scale and the forces once they have the content explained to them.
