Went on a trip to Uluru (Ayers Rock) – Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) National Park a couple of weeks ago. And the landscape is every bit as beautiful as I’d anticipated. The colours both day and night of the rocks, vegetation and sky just have to be seen to be believed.
The timing of our visit couldn’t have been better. It had been raining a lot before we got there but we had only beautifully clear skies. Plus a nearly full moon.
So here is Uluru just after dusk. The rock itself and the vegetation in the foreground is lit by the moon and the golden glow behind the rock is the reflection of the sunset behind the camera.
The large purple/pink cloud immediately above the rock I’m told is the Large Magellanic Cloud our nearby galactic neighbour at a mere 160,000 light years. Also I think the little white X in the top right hand corner of the cloud is actually an iridium flare when the sun is reflected off a passing communications satellite.
It’s a 30 second exposure at ISO 1600 so some noise and the stars are beginning to trail rather than being the pinpricks you get at shorter exposures. I’ve actually got a separate startrails sequence over Uluru that I’ll be posting in due course.

Well that is just magnificent. Looks like a rock aura. Beautiful, beautiful, Geoff.
Thanks heaps – yeah was very lucky with the sunset reflection – does give it that aura quality.

Stunning image Geoff..don’t think I have seen one before with the stars
Thanks Noel – it’s very hard to get a good shot of Uluru with stars as the park rangers are over zealous and efficious and kick you out of the Park at 7.30pm just when the night sky is getting interesting. Luckily I grabbed this one just before the ranger’s headlights swung in behind me and wrecked the subsequent shots.
