Eye of the Rainbow

Eye of the Rainbow by Geoff Coleman

Eye of the Rainbow

I don’t often photograph birds – they are usually way too fast for me! (I’m kinetically challenged – anything that moves faster than the moon or the stars is a major problem for me lol).
Anyway one of the brilliant things about where I live is that we are on a Rainbow Lorikeet superhighway. All day these amazing birds zing back and forth across my yard on exactly the same diagonal trajectory. So I took to feeding them and man was that an experience! At one stage my daughter counted 87 of them on my balcony and this tree waiting to be fed. Talk about a full-colour version of Hitchcock’s “The Birds”.
And then those bastard white cockatoos got in on the act and swooped down in a bunch of about 10 and stood over the Rainbows. Feisty little critters though – even though the white cockatoo mobsters were 5 times their size I saw a couple of these little fellas going for them.
I’ve got some shots but my backyard looks so crap in the background I’m too embarassed to post them.

Wow Geoff what a change from your usual style! Definitely something you should pursue, this is stunning. I can’t beleive the sharpness and colours. The composition and DOF are perfect too. Lucky you to have access to this all the time! ;)

They are a decorative addition to the garden!
Watch those cockatoos – I was feeding eastern rosellas and a gang of cockies came in a threw the plate off the table and broke it ‘cause there were no more sunflower seeds! Cantankerous buggers ;)

Aren’t they stunning creatures? Enjoyed the story accompanying this photograph. All those beautiful birds must have been quite a sight… I’m more interested in your back garden though! ;-) Great work!

AllyL – yes they certainly are beautiful and those white cockatoos are definitely the standover merchants of the bird world. If I don’t feed them they set about systematically tearing up my decking with their incredibly strong beaks. I constantly spray them with a water gun but they just keep coming back!
Jennifer – thank you, but believe me you don’t want to see my backyard lol!
    mikrin – thanks

I love these guys, yes, Cockatoos rely on their size to be bullies, but the smaller the bird, the more fiesty they seem to get. This is one of the best photographic captures of this bird that I have ever seen.
