Light's Flight
Dawn at Garie Beach in Royal NP just south of Sydney Australia.
Being near an international airport is a bugger for night shots but it does tend to make the dawns just that much more spectacular. This is the vapour trail from a dawn takeoff. I like the way the sun looks anchored by its own light while the light from the vapour trail soars.
What a magic morning this was. Got a bunch of shots I was happy with and then after taking them I decided to wander over to the rock platform just next to the sun in this shot to watch the rest of the sunrise. There were about a dozen fishermen silhouetted against this sun with orange waves breaking over the rock platform in front of them. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better two huge whales surfaced right in front of where I was sitting – about 100m offshore. Everyone stopped what they were doing and just watched their graceful rise and fall through the water, spouting their breath mist against the dawn. It was actually good to have the camera packed away and just to sit and watch.

What an incredible photo, and thanks for the short text, it really brings the picture to life knowing the background behind it.

Oh Geoff, you’ve done it again! ;) Amazing graduated colours, and the cliff on the left hand side gives shape and interest. At first glance I wasn’t too sure about the little rectangle in front of the sun but thanks for explaining. And good on you for getting up that early!!

Beautiful! I’ve enjoyed camping here but I’ve never seen it look so good :)
I like the way the vapour trail sets off the other colours.

Very nice shot Geoff and the little story with it is even better I think. It almost sacrilege to describe something so beautiful then say that you were glad the camera was packed away but I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes you just have to look, see and feel without wondering what f-stop you should be using. You have some marvellous images in your portfolio. Thank you for sharing it with us.
