Dance to the End of Time #3

Dance to the End of Time #2
Another one from the archives that I didn’t get around to posting.
I shot this 3 years ago in winter under a full moon at about midnight at Lake Eucumbene in the Snowy Mountains, Australia. This was my first shoot outside at night in winter. It was minus 5 degrees and when I got back home and my fingers started to thaw out I couldn’t believe the pain – Lesson 1 for winter night shots – wear mittens at the very least!
These trees were drowned along with a whole valley to create a man-made lake as part of a hydro scheme in the 1950s. They resurfaced as a result of a drought we’d been having for the last few years courtesy of global warming.

Stunning!! A great capture and to have the Milky Way showing so well even with a Full moon. The moons illumination of the dead trees looks great against the stellar background. The 800iso has not impacted the image very much either. A great photo.
Geoff Coleman... replied
It was an incredible sky – never seen so many stars in a full-moon sky. Thanks for your lovely comment.
Helene Kippert

Great shot mate, fantastic mood, those trees have so much character. Got frost nip a few times myself and the thawing process is without a doubt the most painful experience I’ve ever gone through. Years ago I got excited about a dawn snow shoot on the Bogong high plains and took off in the early morning without gloves, bad mistake. It was the same pain as banging your thumb with a hummer except over all the fingers and it lasts much much longer, gloves are good.
Geoff Coleman... replied
I hear you brother – the analogy with the hammer is an excellent one – incredible pain! Never forgotten the mittens since! Was worth it though. These trees are no longer standing so I’m glad to have got them while they were. Thanks mate.
Debra James P...

OMG ... ‘the heavens declare God’s handiwork…’ as the Psalmist says.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Yep some of those Psalmists just nailed it. Thanks Marguerite.

simply gorgeous – that night sky is unreal, silky yet thick, looks as if the tree was placed in front of the sky or vice versa. hard to believe its one photo. I’d love if this was on the ceiling in my bedroom, so I could look at it every night before falling asleep.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Well then buy a poster of it silly and stick it on your ceiling lol!! Yeah it’s all one pic – I took a gaziillion shots of these trees from all angles – it was such an incredible night and the landscape so surreal and timeless. Thanks so much Trace for stopping by – how you been. Oh I’ve got a new profile for my non-landscapes if you’re interested over here

Very impressive image, trying to figure out how it was shot, looks very low, but there should be water if the trees were drown at some stage?
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks for your lovely comment. Yes they used to be completely underwater but the drought has been so long and intense that the shoreline is now 300m away from them so I was able to stand beneath them and photography up their length to the night sky above. You can see another perspective of the same trees here
Sue Kane
Excellent image Geoff…leaves you pondering!
Geoff Coleman... replied

Fantastic image – those old trees reaching up to the stars gives a great sense of time passing. I am also jealous that I’m swamped by light pollution wherever I go and never see skies like this. Great work!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks James – yeah you really have to get away from the cities to see the real sky anymore. Very sad.

She’s a beauty! The the ISO sensitvity of your Cannon is great! My pentax doesn’t quite give the same clarity at 800 ISO and at 30 seconds!

WOW, I WISH WE HAD THIS KIND OF VIEW OF THE MILKY WAY. I LIVE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND THERE IS SO MUCH LIGHT POLLUTION THAT I’VE NEVER EVEN ATTEMPTED TO GET A SHOT LIKE THIS. DO YOU MIND IF I ASK WHICH LENS YOU USED? ALSO, WAS IT A STRAIGHT 30 SECONDS ON A TRIPOD OR AN EQUITORIAL MOUNT? I HAVE A MEADE ATX60ET WITH AN EQUITORIAL MOUNT AND I’VE THOUGHT ABOUT PUTING MY CAMERA ON IT, BUT I CAN’T FIND BOTH OF THE MOUNTS I NEED FOR THE CAMERA TO FIT THE TELESCOPE AND EVEN IF I COULD, THE TELESCOPE MOUNTING SYSTEM WOULD PREVENT ME FROM TAKING STRAIGHT UP IMAGES, THE CAMERA WOULD HIT THE BASE. BOB :)
