Curtain Call
“The world’s a theatre, the earth a stage, Which God and nature do with actors fill”- Ancient Poverb
Dying storm at sea under a full moon, Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park.
Do you ever find yourself surprised by a picture you’ve taken – it keeps calling you back and you can’t put your finger on why? You know it’s probably not going to be popular but something about it just won’t let you go. That’s this pic for me. I had a whole sequence of lightning shots from the height of this storm and was going to create a composite. But at the very end of the storm, as the full moon rose through its fraying ends this little moment happened. And it just won’t let me go.

This is fabulous Geoff! I know exactly what you mean by an image not letting you go. What I love about this is the lack of the obvious (lighting bolts, the moon, etc..) It leaves so much up to the imagination. Truly unique and beautiful work!!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks Simone – that is a really thoughtful and interesting observation. My pics don’t usually leave much to the imagination at all – if there is an opposite extreme to a minimalist I’m probably it. Maybe that’s why this one won’t let me go. Thanks heaps.

I think this is one of those captures that should be considered evolution of photography, It really is something that you don’t ever see and it’s so refreshing to see. An absolutely brilliant and interesting capture, so unusual in the best of ways!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Oh Michael what an incredibly comment. I am so very humbled and elated at the same time if that isn’t too contradictory. Thank you so much.
Travis Easton
Pure art Geoff, it is indeed strangely compelling, perfect chaos.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thank you Travis – so glad you think so too.

So much drama maybe, the movement, relenting darkness..and then the spot light..shining down…theatrical and deep. nice work!
Geoff Coleman... replied
That’s a lovely description – thanks so much – I really enjoyed it.

It’s the shaft of moon reflection spilling out onto the water that does it for me. With the sun around not being able to break through after the passing of a storm, it’s the moon’s job to reset the balance of clarity and stillness as the storm zaps and fades away within itself and over the horizon.
I also know exactly what you mean about an image not letting go, I just uploaded an image that i’ve deleted from here twice because it wasn’t popular, but I still love it (and it’s going to stay now!)
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks for your lovely and perceptive analysis Stuart – really appreciate the care you take with comments. Good for you respecting your own “keeper”.

Great image Geoff and I really mean that. It holds your attention and if you manage to do that you have a special image not just a pretty picture. I have one image in my portfolio which rang a bell after seeing ‘Curtain Call’. Again not a popular image (and not nearly as good as this one). It’s titled ‘Dark Light’ and has that similar orange flash. I think that this type of image captures the power of nature and draws the viewer in and ‘calls you back’. Anyway, I’m rambling but I’m sure that there’s Zen in there somewhere. :)

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this comment – very much appreciate it.

Building on your opening thought from the proverb, I am reminded of the biblical words that light does overcome darkness … I was struck with how powerful the emerging moon is, despite the beauty of the darkness and the last orange hurrah of the storm. This is a great storm shot because as someone above said, none of the usual bolts of lightening etc. I can see why you are ‘stuck on it’!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks heaps for your beautiful description Marguerite – it means a lot to me.

The one thing I love about available light, long exposure photography is the element of chaos involved. you just never know exactly how it will turn out! Sometimes when you ‘tweak’ the shot, something special emerges! Nice bit of ‘chaos’!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks for your very considered comment Tim – couldn’t agree more about the alchemy of night long exposures.
Richard George
The smooth tranquility of the image struck me. Seems you could hear a pin drop…very calming in a impending sort of way. Nicely done.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks for that beautiful comment Richard.
Helene Kippert
Sometimes background is as compelling as what happens in the foreground. This is mysterious and full of possibility and I love the play of light.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks for that lovely considered comment Helene – that is a really interesting observation. I think I might play with that idea a bit.
Olivia Moore
Wonderful work. So dramatic.
