Dance to the End of Time
Worth going to the larger view – lots more stars.
I shot this in winter under a full moon at about midnight at Lake Eucumbene in the Snowy Mountains, Australia. This was my first shoot outside at night in winter. It was minus 5 degrees and when I got back home and my fingers started to thaw out I couldn’t believe the pain – Lesson 1 for winter night shots – wear mittens at the very least!
These trees were drowned along with a whole valley to create a man-made lake as part of a hydro scheme in the 1950s. They’ve resurfaced as a result of a drought we’ve been having for the last few years courtesy of global warming.

I agree; looking at this larger is very worthwhile. A superb exposure and composition! That sky, stars, clouds, and all, is just priceless. I really like the silhouetting of the trees against the sky. An excellent piece of work, Geoff! Cheers! Chris

This a fabulously composed shot, with the “twin” trees in the corner, leaning towards the stars (amazing to see so many stars actually – slow shutter speed?). The white luminosity in the far background gives it depth. The tones are very “earthy”, I’d say very masculine almost!

another great shot Geoff, I know this place well. sadly those trees are no longer standing. when I first visited this place the water line was at the bottom of the trees, when I went back this last may the trees are gone, just broken stick now and the lake has fallen even further than in your pic. very sad.

Thanks so much Annette – that is so sad to hear that as I’ve been planning to go back with new camera and skills and re-do them. Isn’t it the most surreal landscape – incredibly haunting at night in particular. Can’t believe the lake level has fallen even further!
